THE WHEELER DOES FEBRUARY IN ASPEN

FEBRUARY AT THE WHEELER:

ABIGAIL WASHBURN & THE SPARROW QUARTET, Sat 2/7
SECOND CITY NATIONAL TOURING COMPANY, Fri 2/13
JOHN OATES’ “THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS,” Sun 2/15
TOM RUSH, Thurs 2/19
VUSI MAHLASELA, Fri 2/20
JERRY JEFF WALKER, Sat 2/21
plus … do you TWITTER?

———————————————————————-

B?LA FLECK’S SQUEEZE SINGS LIKE A SPARROW

The all-star collaboration featuring the premier banjo player in the world B?la Fleck, acclaimed cellist Ben Sollee, and Grammy-nominated fiddler, Casey Driessen, unveiled Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet in May 2008. Abigail Washburn has, according to Newsweek magazine, released “the most weirdly wonderful album to land atop the bluegrass charts” this year.

Abigail Washburn never set out to be a songwriter or a recording artist. So when she found herself on stage in a smoke-filled Beijing club playing her banjo and singing old time Appalachian mountain music in Chinese to a packed house, she was as surprised as anyone. “It had a profound effect on me. I discovered a Chinese culture that was so deep and ancient; it changed my perspective on America,” says Washburn. A student of Chinese culture and American-roots music, Washburn has combined her passions to create a gorgeous, joyful new sound,” says Newsweek.

Enter B?la Fleck, and the rest is … well, recent history. And this is your chance to latch on to something extremely cool that most of the rest of the nation hasn’t found out about yet.

Check out something truly weird, wonderful, and Bela-approved on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7th at 8pm. $40 all seats.

———————————————————————-

THE SECOND CITY COMES TO THE FIRST TOWN OF COMEDY

For every year they came, trudging through the snow from the flatlands of the midwest up to see us here in the Rockies. And sell out they did, with their own brand of improvisational humor that shook the house at every visit. But then they went away for 2007 … and 2008 …

Now THE SECOND CITY NATIONAL TOURING COMPANY is back, and at 2006 prices. $27.50 for all seats gets you in for a bellyful of comedy that will warm up your winter night. You know the deal - they show up, you pitch words and ideas at them, and the stage lights up. Big-time.

So welcome them back to the Wheeler’s stage on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13th at 8pm. The perfect Valentine’s? Probably not, but a lot more fun than another box of chocolates.

———————————————————————-

JOHN OATES EXPLAINS IT ALL FOR YOU (WITH HELP)

He’s so much more than a garden-variety rock star. He’s our very own JOHN OATES, and according to The Aspen Times he’s our choice for #1 local celebrity. And how did he earn this distinction?

Because John is so cool. He loves being a local. He loves giving his audiences so much more than they paid for. And he loves getting down into the guts of the biz and giving us mere mortal a glimmer of the magic. That’s why we’re so excited to partner with John and Jazz Aspen Snowmass on a three-part series where you can learn all about THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS.

John’s first outing with us takes place on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15th with one of Aspen’s favorite new-school folkies, PATTY GRIFFIN, and special guest SCOTT MILLER. Three great writers, three stools, three microphones. And a world full of stories and tunes, in a show that you cannot catch anywhere else … not New York, not Los Angeles … only at the Wheeler. And all for $25.00 for adults, $20.00 for 18 and under.

———————————————————————-
… PLUS FIVE MORE IN FEBRUARY

Yes, we’re keeping the calendar rolling hot and heavy all February long:
* Thursday, February 19 is iconic folkie TOM RUSH
* Friday, February 20 is “The Voice” - South Africa’s VUSI MAHLASELA
* Saturday, February 21 is the Emperor of Luckenbach, JERRY JEFF WALKER (making his first Aspen appearance in ten years!)
* Wednesday, February 25 is GUITAR BLUES with Jorma Kaukonen, Robben Ford, and Ruthie Foster
* Thursday, February 26 is the second STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS night with JOHN OATES, TIFT MERRITT, and SCOTTY EMERICK

———————————————————————-
MEANWHILE, BACK IN JANUARY …
Don’t forget a great evening of California bluegrass, vintage rock and country, and a whole lot more with CHRIS HILLMAN, JOHN McEUEN, and special guest HERB PEDERSEN. From The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers to The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and back again, this is one of those concert nights you’ll talk about for months and years afterwards. SATURDAY, JANUARY 31st. $35.00 all seats.

B?LA FLECK HELPS TO REDEFINE BLUEGRASS - AGAIN!
When Aspen wants to check out the future direction of Bluegrass, it needs to look no further than the new collaboration of the world’s most innovative banjo master, B?la Fleck, plus acclaimed cellist Ben Sollee and Grammy-nominated fiddler, Casey Driessen to bring us ABIGAIL WASHBURN & THE SPARROW QUARTET ( http://wheeleroperahouse.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=G-XZDwGhAAEAAAGlAAKBww ) live at the Wheeler, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7.

Crossing global and cultural lines, they have been the first group of American musicians invited to officially tour the Tibetan territory. They also performed ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new American Embassy for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. From their travels through China to Europe and to our very own mountain town, this is a music quartet not to be missed. See what B?la Fleck, one of our nation’s finest musicians and world’s greatest banjo player is up to today. B?la Fleck amazed music lovers with the Flecktones, surprised us with sold-out shows with Edgar Meyer at the Aspen Music Festival, and now brings a fresh and new sound to bluegrass with ABIGAIL WASHBURN & THE SPARROW QUARTET.

And with this tremendous offer, Wheeler Associates and email patrons can be at the forefront of new music at half-off. $40.00 per seat regularly, this special two-for-one offer gets a couple a fabulous night out for just two $20 bills. [Limit four tickets per patron.] But it won-t last long: This special offer expires at 5pm on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5.

RANDY NEWMAN! JOHN OATES! GOING ON SALE SOON!

NEW FOR 2009 - TWO GREAT ANNOUNCEMENTS!

RANDY NEWMAN FOR SATURDAY, MARCH 7th!

JOHN OATES’ SINGER/SONGWRITER SERIES
“THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS”
THIS FEBRUARY AND MARCH!

———————————————————————-

MR OATES BRINGS IT EVEN CLOSER TO HOME THIS WINTER

Bless him, JOHN OATES loves the Wheeler, loves Aspen, and loves his day job. And if you saw his sell-out holiday performance, you witnessed that in spades.

Now at long last the Wheeler and John Oates, in collaboration with Jazz Aspen Snowmass, are ready to launch John’s singer/songwriter project, THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS. Three dates, three songwriters, and one of them is always John. Plus, each show will feature a local student songwriter performing his or her future hit single!

So, here’s the line-up:
* SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15 - PATTY GRIFFIN and special guest Scott Miller (and John)
* THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26 - TIFT MERRITT and special guest Scotty Emerick (and John)
* THURSDAY, MARCH 19 - JIMMY WAYNE and special guest Bob Regan (and John - is this getting repetitive?)

You can’t get this series anywhere else. This is music being played as the writer originally heard it in his or her head, complete with the story behind how it got there. And if you’ve heard a few of John’s stories, then you know that this is good stuff. And so much more than just a show.

It’s locally grown, for locals. [Tourists welcome also.] Each show is affordably priced at $25.00 adults; $20.00 for 18 and under. Limited premium seats at $50.00.

Or buy all three shows for the package price of $69.00 for adults and $50.00 for 18 and under. Is that a deal or what?!

———————————————————————-
RANDY NEWMAN FINALLY COMES TO ASPEN

There are some shows it seems like the stars will never align for, and we’ve been chasing singer/ songwriter/ composer/ philosophic curmudgeon RANDY NEWMAN for years. Now, at long last, we actually have him.

The man who wrote everything from the edgy landmark 1974 album “Good Old Boys” to the sweet scores for such hits as “Toy Story” and “Cars” makes a very special solo piano appearance on SATURDAY, MARCH 7th.

This is a very special evening where all proceeds will benefit the education programs of Jazz Aspen Snowmass, and that’s a very big deal indeed. Jazz Aspen does everything from buying kids in our valley musical instruments that they can express themselves on, to funding lessons so that these kids can be tomorrow’s superstars.

And what better way to raise some much-needed cash than through a solo concert by one of the great American masters. Tickets are priced at $85.00 for most of the house, plus $125 for limited premium seating, and a very small handful of $250 seats that include a private reception with Randy.

———————————————————————-
AS AN EMAIL CLUB MEMBER, YOU GET IN EARLY!

Tickets for THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS go on public sale next Monday, January 12th, and RANDY NEWMAN tickets go on public sale one week after that, on Tuesday, January 20th (we are closed for Martin Luther King Jr Day).

But YOU as an email club member can buy tickets before the crowd. For THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS you can start immediately. And for RANDY NEWMAN you can buy starting Tuesday, January 13th. Just contact the Wheeler’s Aspen Show Tickets at 920-5770 (866-449-0464). Early access is good right up until the opening bell on first day of sale.

WOW - WINTERSKOL WEEKEND AT THE WHEELER!

Wheeler Opera House

…………………………………….

A NEW YEAR - A BIG CELEBRATION!

THE WHEELER TURNS 25 (GOING ON 120)
AND WINTERSK?L IS JUST THE START OF THE FUN

———————————————————————-

WINTERSK?L HAPPENING #1: FREE COMEDY NIGHT

What would Wintersk?l be without a free event at the Wheeler? The bar will stay open, you can take your beverage of choice into the theatre, and the comedy will be truly local and truly funny. And the price is right!

Come join Aspen’s hardest-working stand-up comics - Alexa Fitzpatrick, Beth Brandon, Don Chaney, Todd Hartley, and Mark Thomas - plus special guests for a quick jolt of local humor (tourists, beware!), starting at 8pm on THURSDAY, JANUARY 8th. Free stuff! You can’t beat it!

———————————————————————-
WINTERSK?L HAPPENING #2: RYAN SHUPE & THE RUBBER BAND

OK, so maybe this one isn’t free - a whole five bucks for Aspen locals (that is Aspen-proper, with proof of local residency in the 81611 or 81612 zip codes), which also gets you a drink ticket - but it’s a fabulous opportunity to duck in out of the cold and get Aspen’s first look at RYAN SHUPE & THE RUBBER BAND on FRIDAY, JANUARY 9th at 8pm.

And we think you’ll find Ryan Shupe extremely Aspen. Creating a unique style of music using guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, fiddle, bass, drums, banjo and keyboard, this self-dubbed “PostHeeHawFunkadelicHipHopNewGrass” music draws from Rock, Bluegrass, Pop, Country, Jazz, and Folk. From Salt Lake City to Telluride (where they won the National Band Competition) to Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs, these gents are western music heroes, but pretty much unknown up here in Ute City. So take a chance - and enjoy a drink on us! [For the non-Aspenites full-priced tix are only $17.50, still a fantastic bargain, so please join us anyway!]

For more information: www.shupe.net/ ( http://wheeleroperahouse.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=G123hQGhAAIAAAb8AAJz7w )

———————————————————————-

WINTERSK?L HAPPENING #3: ROBERT EARL KEEN

You could say Robert is the new Lyle, since this is the fourth January in a row that the man has played the Wheeler and he’s already well on the way to being sold out. Again.

And if you’ve seen a Robert Earl show, you know why. Long necks, armadillos, vidalia onions … these are just a few of the burning topics of the day that REK takes on with pure gusto and Lone Star State abandon.

So here’s the facts: ROBERT EARL KEEN, SATURDAY, JANUARY 10th at 9pm - right after the torchlight parade and fireworks on Aspen Mountain. Tix are $40 and truly going very fast. The man sells out. Do not delay.

———————————————————————-

AS FOR THE REST OF JANUARY …

There’s more to January than just Wintersk?l. LAST COMIC STANDING brings the five finalists from Season Six to the Wheeler stage, including winner Iliza Shlesinger, for two great shows on SUNDAY, JANUARY 18th at 5:30pm and 8:00pm. And the best part? No TV censor. So expect the gloves to come off and no comedic mercy given. $35.00 all seats.

And the month closes out on SATURDAY, JANUARY 31st with two of the Wheeler’s best musical-friend headliners, plus a favorite sidekick, when CHRIS HILLMAN and JOHN McEUEN partner up with HERB PEDERSEN for an evening of California Bluegrass that you won’t get anywhere else. Why? Because Chris and John said they wanted to do it, and said they wanted to do it here. Case closed; Aspen wins again. $35.00 all seats.

———————————————————————-

AND COMING UP LATER THIS WINTER …

It’s just more great shows all winter long at the Wheeler:
* SECOND CITY NATIONAL TOURING COMPANY on Friday, February 13th. Back from a three-year hiatus and funnier than ever. $27.50 all seats.
* TOM RUSH on Thursday, February 19th. One of the great American folk artists, back by popular demand. $25.00 all seats.
* VUSI MAHLASELA on Friday, February 20th. “The Voice” from South Africa, last seen with the Aspen Writers’ Foundation. $27.50 all seats.
* JERRY JEFF WALKER on Saturday, February 21st. The original Texas maverick, back after a ten-year absence. $65.00 all seats.
* GUITAR BLUES featuring Jorma Kaukonen, Robben Ford, and Ruthie Foster. Extreme six-string twelve bar. $39.50 all seats.
* “1964 … THE TRIBUTE.” Yep, the mop tops are back again. Shake your pre-Sgt Pepper booty to the best Beatles cover band anywhere. $45 all seats.
