MOUNTAINSUMMIT:
“GREAT FILMS AND GREAT CONVERSATIONS”
ASPEN’S NEWEST FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE
DEBUTS AT THE WHEELER THIS AUGUST 27 - 30
ON SALE THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 7
———————————————————————-
THIS FESTIVAL HAS IT ALL. AMAZON SWIMMERS. REFORMED CONVICTS. LAND-RIGHTS ACTIVISTS. AND THE FIRST AMERICAN TO CLIMB MOUNT EVEREST.
What happens when you marry the best parts of the Aspen Ideas Festival to the adrenaline-rush of SkiCo’s adventure films? You get MOUNTAINSUMMIT, a first-time collaboration between Mountainfilm in Telluride and the Wheeler Opera House.
Like a Barnum & Bailey circus of the mind, MOUNTAINSUMMIT promises to stimulate your senses, engage your brain, and leave you with so many truly fascinating stories that you won’t run out of them until the next MOUNTAINSUMMITcomes to town. Here’s a partial list of what’s coming:
* JIM WHITTAKER. Now 80 years old, Jim was the first American to scale Mount Everest, and can still take most climbers behind the woodshed for a spanking. The man is a living legend, an inspiration, and one of the great adventuring speakers of all time.
* “THE COVE.” This movie has been long sought-after for Aspen since last spring, but MOUNTAINSUMMIT has it. Dolphins, an eco-crusade, and what ends up in your dinner all come together in this brilliant documentary on a strange cove in remote Japan.
* “BIG RIVER MAN.” Serbian Martin Strel is big in everything he does, and swimming rivers is the epitome of it all. But he doesn’t swim across rivers, he swims the length of rivers. And when he swam the Amazon, he took on everything from pirahna to crocodiles to brain viruses … and survived. And is coming to Aspen with this great documentary feature.
* “THE FARM - TEN DOWN.” Usually movies about prison farms are dark, disturbing affairs, but this follow-up doc is amazingly hopeful as it follows four men’s stories - including two who actually finish serving their time and leave to make a better world. One of them, Ashanti Witherspoon, will be coming to Aspen. And his story will make you sit up and take note.
* “ROCK PROPHECIES.” Photographer Robert Knight started off as a kid with a camera at a Jimi Hendrix concert. Forty years later he’s still snapping, but also senses a larger calling in discovering new rock talent that he knows the world needs to see. As if the film isn’t enough, Robert will be in town with an exhibit of pix of his famous friends, including everyone from Jeff Beck to Slash to Stevie Ray Vaughan.
* TIM DeCHRISTOPHER. In the last days of the Bush administration, a tremendous land-grab went up in the American West for the benefit of the oil and gas industry. One activist stood up against it in Utah … and won, even if it means going to jail. Come hear this unique speaker’s story, only at MOUNTAINSUMMIT.
* “THE YES MEN FIX THE WORLD.” Ever watched the news and wanted to pull the ultimate practical joke on the real forces of evil in the world? The Yes Men do it, guerilla-style … sometimes Marx Brothers style. But always in a way that causes a stir. From Bhopal India to New Orleans, this dynamic duo is sure to be making a mess of things … in a good way, of course.
Diverse backgrounds; diverse stories. And remember - this is a short list of what MOUNTAINSUMMIT will bring to town this month. Get the full schedule at the Wheeler’s website!
